The Best Age for Braces
There’s no set age for a child’s first orthodontic appointment, but the first visit typically takes place at the age of seven. This is the age when most kids will have all of their baby teeth, and their adult teeth will have begun their descent. This will give your orthodontist the best forecast into your child’s dental future. Learn more here.
Between the ages of 11 and 18 is when teenagers typically have all of their adult teeth. Once they’re in place, this is when an orthodontist evaluates their spacing and straightness. For this reason, braces are very common among teenagers to correct any issues for the future.
If you think you’re too old for braces, think again. Braces have their benefit at every age. In fact, more than one quarter of Canadians seeking orthodontic treatment is over the age of 21. Not only will braces in your adult years improve your smile and straighten teeth, they could also improve your chewing, digestion and susceptibility to other dental diseases. Learn more here.
Types of Braces
Traditional metal Braces
With traditional braces, an orthodontist will apply metal brackets to your teeth and thread a flexible wire through them. As the wire is tightened, your teeth will gradually shift as well. Luckily, the brackets are much smaller now than they were in the past, but still offer the opportunity for colourful bands that some kids and teens prefer for a personalized touch.
Ceramic braces mimic metal braces except that the brackets are made of a ceramic material that’s the same colour as your teeth. The wiring is also tooth-coloured making them a less-noticeable option for orthodontics compared to traditional metal braces.
As their name suggests, Invisalign® is a virtually invisible version of braces. They consists of a set of custom-fit, clear molds that fit over your teeth. These are known as “aligners” and, as you wear them, your teeth will gradually shift into position. The best part is that you can remove them for short periods of time, making brushing and flossing a breeze.
